The mornings are in the 60s, afternoons in the 80s, and there’s a breeze in Texas! 🍂🐴 Bee and I have been taking full advantage—heading out on off-property rides with her buddy Calvin, walking through neighborhoods, and working on her parade training skills. This week’s adventures included everything from construction noise (yes, even rebar cutting!) to flashing utility trucks and curious onlookers—like one little boy who said, “Well, you don’t see that every day.” He’s right! Back at the Ponderosa, Bee and Sunny got a visit from Daphne, a puppy-in-training and Sunny’s sister. She’s a Vizsla—a high-energy, Velcro-hearted pup who zipped around the barn making everyone smile. Meanwhile, Jim and I are packing for Nashville to see the grandkids (and their parents too!). Fall rides, family time, and a barn full of happy animals—life feels full and good. And next week? Bee’s got two big announcements to share straight from the mare herself. Buckle up, friends — this week’s Buzz is a long one. Between Bee’s training wins, herd drama, new horses, and some rodeo highlights, there’s plenty to share. So grab a warm beverage and settle in. Bee impressed us on a couple of rides with Calvin this week, showing off her patience at the mounting block, closing a heavy gate from the saddle, and even tackling an off-property ride along a busy road without spooking. Not every moment was perfect (she reminded me who’s boss when I tried mounting from the ground), but progress is stacking up. The herd kept things lively, too. Joker lived up to his name charging in, Sunny played the possessive friend, and Royce turned full-on bodyguard when Spur showed too much interest in Bee. Watching herd politics unfold never gets old. We also welcomed two new faces, Dream and Cruella. Dream had a rough first few days, pacing herself into a sweat missing her sister. A quiet moment of trust helped her settle, and now she’s pacing less, eating, and drinking. Cruella, her calm paint sister, has taken it all in stride. And while Bee is making progress, our barn family was making headlines. Spur and Amelia nailed a personal record with a clean barrel run, and Payton with Mercedes brought home the buckle at the State Fair of Texas Youth Rodeo — fastest time of the event. 🐴 Bee keeps me humble. What I thought was going to be a relaxing spa day for her turned into a crash course in something I had never dealt with before… summer sores. 🤢 Of course it had to be gross, because horses always know how to keep us on our toes. Fair warning before you click through: there are close-up photos of Bee’s lips and chin in the blog. For the record, she has more chin hair than I do, which is great for horses but not so great for women of a certain age. In this week’s Buzz we cover: ✔️ What summer sores are and how they affect horses ✔️ How we are treating Bee’s sores with vet guidance ✔️ Why prevention is tricky even with masks, sprays, feed-throughs, and fly predators ✔️ Owner precautions when treating sores And for a happier update… Jim gave me an early birthday gift: membership to Clinton Anderson’s Downunder Horsemanship Club. Bee and I are starting groundwork in the round pen. She has earned A+’s in desensitization to the lead rope and stick and string, and now we are working on yielding and backing up. Clinton’s philosophy focuses on trust, respect, and communication, and Bee is already reminding me that I am on a steep learning curve. 🏀 This one was a wild ride to paint! A client originally purchased a Wise Market gift card (yes, I offer those!) and the recipient and I teamed up to design a basketball that is truly one of a kind. The final design included: 👑 Clash Royale kings 💵 A $100 bill 🌊 A dolphin 🦋 A butterfly ✨ Angel number 999 📅 08.24.25 It is by far the most eclectic ball I have ever painted, and those Clash Royale kings were a challenge.
